Founded by local resident Jodie Smith in 2016, Sowerby Bridge Snails Running Club was created for those seeking a running group that’s more about community than Lycra or intense training. Now one of the most inclusive and supportive clubs in Calderdale, the Snails welcome runners of all abilities—from total beginners to seasoned marathon runners—in a relaxed and friendly environment.
The club’s tagline, “We never leave a snail behind,” encapsulates its ethos of inclusivity and fun. This winning formula was recently recognised at the Community Foundation for Calderdale’s Community Spirit Awards, where the Snails won the “When We Move, We’re Stronger” award. It’s a well-deserved accolade for a grassroots club that has grown from a handful of runners to nearly 300 members—including an inspiring 82-year-old member who’s still going strong!
Weekly Runs and Couch to 5K Programme
The club meets every Monday and Wednesday at 6:30 pm. For just £1 per session, anyone can join and give it a go. For those new to running or looking to build confidence, the Snails have launched their next Couch to 5K programme. This initiative helps participants achieve personal goals, improve fitness, and stay motivated alongside a supportive group.
Building Community Beyond Running
Beyond running, the Snails foster a strong social connection, organising regular events and creating lasting friendships. The club provides a sense of belonging for those at risk of social isolation, full-time carers, or anyone seeking community while prioritising their health and wellbeing.
The Snails also travel across the UK and abroad to participate in parkruns, sharing their love of running and adventure far and wide.
Something for Everyone
The club caters to all abilities with six different groups:
- Steady steadies: 14–16 min/mile
- Steadies: 12–14 min/mile
- Medium steadies: 10:30–12 min/mile
- Mediums: 9:30–11 min/mile
- Medium fast: 8–10 min/mile
- Turbos: under 8 min/mile
The Snails meet Mondays & Wednesday and all runs start at Sowerby Bridge Cricket Club, Walton Street, HX3 6HS at 6:30pm.
Supporting Local Charities
Each year, the Snails champion a local charity, raising funds through events and collaborations like the Halifax parkrun. This year, they supported Overgate Hospice, extending their impact far beyond the running community.
Dave's Story
"I have never really been a sporting person (except watching on TV or at football matches) but at the age of 59, I chose to join the Sowerby Bridge Snails Running Club. I can remember doing my first run on a Monday, which was only 2½ miles, at the end I felt like my legs were dead. I couldn’t even walk up the stairs at home (my wife and daughter were laughing at me)…. But I didn’t give up … this was 8 years ago. Five years ago I took part in a training course and now hold a coach leader licence… After a few months, I started entering races around the country - 10k’s with a medal at the finish - presently I have approximately 150 medals. Saturday mornings saw me joining in parkruns (5k) - up to now, I have completed 99 park runs and I'm hoping to do my 100th on Christmas Day at Shroggs park. I've also now completed 8 marathons and numerous half marathons – raising lots of money for charity along the way.
Don’t be put off by your age or size (I was nearly 18 stone when I started running). It’s a great form of exercise and at the club runs you don’t have to run all the time; jogging or walking is acceptable. Sowerby Bridge Snails' motto is ‘No snail gets left behind."
