Halifax Boxing, Sport & Fitness Club is a community-based club which supports people from all backgrounds. They run on a not-for-profit basis as a social enterprise, meaning any surplus is ploughed back into the club and their work. They aim to include people from all parts of the community in activities at the gym to help promote health, wellbeing and community engagement. Below, club member Ian gives his account of how joining the over 60's circuit training has positively impacted his wellbeing.
Fighting Fit - Ian's Story

I have been a member of the Halifax Boxing Club since January 2022. I had just taken early retirement and was looking for something to help keep me occupied and stay fit at the same time.
My sister encouraged me try the Over 60's circuit training with her and I can honestly say that I've never looked back for numerous reasons.
The staff are so friendly and encouraging and make everyone in the group feel so welcome. The members of the group are also so friendly and supportive, which makes it a joy to attend every week.
"Joining the group has helped me meet new friends, improve my mental and physical wellbeing, and give me a new focus on life."

The exercises we do in a session are varied, fun and challenging and have made a real impact on both my physical and mental wellbeing. However, the most important aspect for me is the group's impact on my social isolation.
I became a widow just before the COVID-19 pandemic and had such a difficult time not only coping with grief but also the isolation the restrictions brought with it. Joining the group has helped me meet new friends, improve my mental and physical wellbeing, and give me a new focus on life.
