Active together in the community
Calderdale’s voluntary and community groups are at the centre of people’s lives.
That's why we want to involve as many as possible in Active Calderdale, to encourage and support people to be more physically active. Working together, we can create messages and opportunities that are timely, relevant and make a real difference.
Many of us want to be more active, but are uncertain about how to startSometimes we lack the confidence to try exercise for the first time. Research shows that people feel more confident about trying new things when they are encouraged to do so by someone they know and in a familiar setting.
Our theory of change shows more detail about how different elements of society contribute to providing the encouragement and opportunity to be physically active.
That’s why we’re asking community and voluntary groups like yours to partner with us
Together, we can help more people in Calderdale to be active on a regular basis. We already work with groups across the borough, and can help you decide:
-
what might work for your group,
-
what’s possible within your capacity and resources,
-
what’s the best way to get started.
Working together, we can help you:
-
make physical activity a regular part of what your group does,
-
get access to useful, reliable information about the benefits of being active,
-
feel confident in building more opportunities to be active into your regular plans.
Download our Play your Part booklet to start finding out how you can get involved.
“We are working with some of the most vulnerable people in our communities who have had to flee their home country for a multitude of reasons. They’ve left behind their families, friends, homes and jobs to seek sanctuary and safety. Physical activity supports people’s mental and physical health and improves their self-confidence and self-esteem. It also gives people a sense of belonging so that Calderdale feels like home, a feeling that some people have not had for years."
Adrian Bell - Integration Manager at St Augustine's

Dipika Kaushal, former CEO of VAC (formerly Voluntary Action Calderdale), talks about the benefits of integrating a physical activity focus within an organisation. She explains how it can help create a stronger, happier, and more successful culture, both for staff and the people they support.
