Feeling safe and confident in your community is something everyone deserves. That's why The Space @ Field Lane Community Hub recently hosted a free self-defence workshop for women, empowering residents with practical skills and increased confidence.
The idea for the workshop came directly from conversations with women in the community. Through informal discussions with residents, staff at The Space identified concerns around personal safety, particularly when walking alone at night or using public transport. In response, the team designed a dedicated day-long workshop to help women feel more confident and capable in these situations.
To create a comfortable and supportive learning environment, the session was open exclusively to women and delivered free of charge, ensuring that cost was not a barrier to participation.
Led by a highly experienced 5th Dan Karate expert, the workshop focused on practical, hands-on learning. Participants were introduced to a range of simple but effective self-defence techniques that could be used in real-life situations. A key message throughout the day was that effective self-defence is not about physical strength, but about using technique, awareness and confidence.
The impact of the workshop was clear. Surveys completed before and after the session showed positive changes in how participants felt about their ability to keep themselves safe. Many reported increased confidence and a greater sense of empowerment after learning the techniques.
For some attendees, the experience has even inspired them to continue their self-defence journey. One aunt and niece who attended together are now exploring opportunities to take part in a longer-term course, building on the skills and confidence gained during the workshop.
Helen Stuart, who led the project design and delivery, said:
"Our customers left feeling more confident, that was our objective and we succeeded. We had follow up from other residents interested in a repeat course."

Participants were equally enthusiastic about the experience and what they had learned.
One attendee commented:
"I gained effective techniques rather than pure survival response."
Another participant, Martine, said:
"Learning to use my weight/body to its full potential. Enjoyable, informative, really brilliant!"
Amanda highlighted the accessibility of the session, saying:
"Very simple techniques to take home."
The workshop demonstrates how listening to local communities can lead to meaningful opportunities that address real concerns while helping people feel safer, stronger and more connected. Following the success of the event and interest from other residents, The Space @ Field Lane Community Hub hopes to explore opportunities for future sessions, ensuring even more women can benefit from these valuable skills.
By creating inclusive, accessible activities that build confidence and wellbeing, The Space continues to play an important role in supporting healthier, happier communities across Calderdale.
