Supporting the growth of girls' rugby at Siddal

In February 2025, a new Under 16s girls' rugby team was established at Siddal Rugby Club by just five players and two committed volunteers. At the time, there were no local rugby opportunities available for girls in this age group, leaving many young people without access to the sport.

Since then, the team has gone from strength to strength. Thanks to the dedication of players, coaches and volunteers, the squad has grown to more than 20 players, supported by up to four coaches. The girls now come together twice a week for training and proudly represent their club in weekly fixtures, recently securing a top-of-the-league finish. For a relatively new team, it's an incredible achievement and a true reflection of their hard work, commitment and team spirit.

Beyond developing their rugby skills, the players have built a strong sense of friendship, trust and belonging. The team has created a positive environment where young women can support one another, grow in confidence and enjoy being active together.

Despite their success, the squad has faced challenges. Players have been competing in second-hand kits, sharing equipment with other teams and relying heavily on volunteer support. Recognising both their achievements and potential, Active Calderdale has invested in helping the team continue its journey.

Funding has supported the purchase of a new personalised match-day kit, giving every player the opportunity to represent their club with pride and helping to strengthen the team's identity. Active has also supported volunteer coaches to gain recognised coaching qualifications, ensuring they have the skills and confidence to provide the best possible experience for the players.

In addition, Siddal has funded team-building activities and away days. These opportunities help develop important life skills that extend beyond sport, encouraging teamwork, resilience and personal growth while supporting the physical, emotional and mental wellbeing of those involved.

Today, more than 25 young women and their families benefit from the provision at Siddal Rugby Club. Home fixtures regularly attract support from the local community, providing visible role models for younger girls and helping to inspire the next generation of players.

The team plays an important role in increasing opportunities for girls' sport across Calderdale. With limited local girls' rugby provision, Siddal's Under 16s offer a valuable pathway for young women from Siddal and surrounding communities, including Hipperholme, Lightcliffe, Park Ward, Ovenden and Illingworth, all priority areas for Active Calderdale.

For many players, participation at this age is particularly significant. As they approach adulthood, access to organised sport can play a vital role in maintaining healthy habits, building confidence and creating lasting social connections. Without this provision, many of these young women may not have access to regular physical activity or the benefits that come from being part of a team.

What stands out most is the commitment shown by the players themselves. Many travel independently to training, often walking on their own and attending regardless of the challenges they may be facing in their personal lives. Their willingness to show up week after week demonstrates just how much the team means to them.

For some, rugby provides far more than an opportunity to play sport. It offers a supportive network, a sense of purpose and a safe space where they feel valued and included. Through the dedication of its players, volunteers and supporters, Siddal Under 16s Girls' Team is helping young women across Calderdale thrive both on and off the pitch.

Both our Under 15s and Under 16s trained together this week. It was great to see the unity between the squads, with everyone supporting each other throughout the session. Bringing different age groups together helps build confidence, friendships, and a real sense of club pride.

Our female pathway shows exactly what we are all about at Siddal, growing the game and building a strong future for women and girls in rugby league.
