At Light Up Black and African Heritage Calderdale (Light Up BAHC), the mission is clear: to help members of the Black, African, and Caribbean communities settle into life in Calderdale. This registered charity is making strides not just through advice and support, but by embedding physical activity into their initiatives—thanks to collaboration with Active Calderdale.
A Vision for Movement
Recognising the importance of movement, Bola Eleyinmi, Chair of Lightup BAHC, identified a need for more active options within the organisation. Many previous activities involved sitting for extended periods, which led to a commitment to integrate physical activity into their programs. With support from Active Calderdale’s Community Led Approach, Light Up BAHC has successfully introduced a range of engaging activities designed to promote both community and well-being.
New Initiatives Taking Flight
The revamped activity timetable now features:
- Regular Walks Around Calderdale: These friendly and informal walks not only help participants stay active but also foster connections and conversations, allowing members to share their everyday challenges and triumphs.
- Exercise Sessions in People’s Park: These sessions aim to build confidence in using local parks, encouraging participants to enjoy their surroundings while getting fit.
- Movement Integration: Volunteers have been trained in boxing by Halifax Star Boxing, empowering them to lead sessions for Light Up BAHC members. This collaboration is a fantastic example of community spirit in action!
Making an Impact
The impact of these activities is already being felt. The stories and experiences shared by participants speak volumes.
Not only are members enjoying the physical benefits of increased activity, but they’re also forming connections and building a sense of belonging in the community.
