Nestled in the heart of Calderdale, Sowerby Walkers & Ramblers is more than just a walking group; it’s a thriving community built on the simple yet powerful idea that walking can change lives. Founded in December 2022 by Sowerby resident and passionate hiker Adrian Horton, the group began as a modest Facebook post inviting locals to join him on countryside hikes. Little did Adrian know that this humble call to action would evolve into a full-blown walking movement with now over 1300 members on the Facebook group.

Breaking Barriers, Building Community

Adrian’s vision was clear from the start: make walking accessible to everyone. Recognising that cost can be a barrier, the group provides free walks with no membership fees. Their mission also highlights the immense mental and physical health benefits of walking. As Adrian says, walking encourages talking — and those conversations can be transformative.

"Really enjoyed my first walk with you. Such a friendly group, blessed with beautiful weather and one of my favourite routes up to Hardcastle Crags. A good day out. Thank you Amelie Lavan, I look forward to getting on more walks."

Carl Popps

The group became fully constituted and insured by June 2023, and by November of that year, they connected with Active Calderdale to discuss how to engage with even more people, particularly those from low-income households or who had never walked before. With funding secured in early 2024, the group introduced shorter, gentler walks like Amelie’s Ambles to welcome less-confident walkers.

"Shout out for more shorter Amelie Ambles in 2025 please!"

"Really enjoyed my first walk. The pace was just right and a lovely group thanks Amelie."

Walking for All Ages and Abilities

Unlike many weekday walking groups catering primarily to retirees, Sowerby Walkers & Ramblers organise weekend walks, attracting younger adults balancing work and other commitments. These walks range from challenging hikes across Calderdale’s hilly terrain to leisurely strolls designed for social connection and confidence-building.

The group’s flexibility shines through their walk leaders, who adapt to the needs of their walkers, whether they’re seeking fitness, friendship, or both. With over 114 walks under their belt — and 50 more led by sister group Royd Walking Friends — they’ve become a hub for local exploration and connection.

"This is a great group. I have been enjoying the routes. There is such a nice bunch of people taking part."

Partnerships and Progress

Collaboration is at the heart of their success. Partnering with organisations like Healthy Minds, Andy’s Man Club, and local GP surgeries, the group extends its impact to diverse community members, including those living with ADHD or navigating mental health challenges. They’ve distributed thousands of leaflets and continue to plan tailored walks into 2025.

The group also prioritises safety and inclusivity. Walkers are encouraged to come prepared with proper equipment, and the group’s 6 trained leaders (4 female and 2 male), create a supportive environment where over 60% of participants are women and girls.

Growing Confidence, One Step at a Time

Many walkers start their journey with hesitation, doubting their abilities. Yet, with every step, they build confidence, stamina, and friendships. The mental health benefits are undeniable — some participants have even reduced their medication thanks to the positive effects of these walks.

Looking ahead, the group has big plans for 2025:

  • Expanding walk leader training including 3 new lowland walk leaders.
  • Training 5 walk leaders in first aid.
  • Offering branded clothing and equipment to fundraise for future needs.

Recognition and Resilience

In less than two years, Sowerby Walkers & Ramblers have made a remarkable impact, earning a nomination for the Community Foundation Community Spirit Awards in the When We Move, We're Stronger category. This recognition underscores their dedication and inspires them to continue their work.

Adrian and his team remain committed to providing a welcoming space for walkers of all ages and abilities. With over 20 walkers attending each week, the demand is clear, and the group is determined to keep moving forward together.
