Nasreen Akhtar – 51, Park Ward

Physical activity was never really on my radar and wasn’t something I saw as being “for someone like me.” I’m in my 50s, a wife, mother and grandmother, and I’ve always believed my role in the home was to care for my family and look after the house – cooking, cleaning and everything in between. This is what I grew up knowing, and it’s what feels normal to me. I don’t see it as a burden, but I also didn’t realise what opportunities were available or that being active is not only okay, but highly encouraged.

One of the main barriers for me was a lack of knowledge and awareness. I didn’t understand that physical activity can look like anything; it doesn’t have to mean intense gym workouts. Looking back, I now realise that walking has always been my main form of activity. Whether it’s going up and down the stairs, running after the grandchildren, or doing everyday tasks like grocery shopping, it all adds up. Even walking to and from places counts, which makes me feel good knowing I’ve been active without even realising it.

I found out about the Himmat walking project through my daughter, and honestly, it’s been so refreshing. It helped me see that I’m not alone and that there are other people in the same position as me, so I never felt like the odd one out. I was hesitant at first, but with a bit of encouragement, I joined the walking group, and I love it.

"Walking is so much fun, even better when you're with a friend. I would definitely recommend it because you'll just feel happier and have a better day!"

Now, it’s become part of my routine. I’ve even grown in confidence and feel able to go out for walks on my own. That said, I do enjoy being part of a group, it’s more fun, and you don’t even realise how many steps you’re doing because you’re chatting and the time just flies by.

I feel so much happier and healthier. Moving my body more has been really refreshing. My mind feels clearer, I sleep better at night, and somehow, I even have more energy now than I did before.
