Back in September, 10-year-old Isaac won several medals whilst representing Team GB at the Special Olympics North West Swimming Gala in Blackpool.

Since joining the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) swimming lesson programme at Sowerby Bridge Pool, Isaac has flourished into a strong swimmer and was able to start training as a Team GB athlete at a competitive swimming club.

Isaac came away with a Gold, Silver, 4th place and a super speeding ticket where he took 8 seconds off his personal best for 25m breaststroke. A huge well done to Isaac and his swim teachers at Sowerby Bridge Pool, Emily and Naj!

Isaac's mum, Amanda says:

“I’m so proud of Isaac and how far he’s come. I can’t thank Debbie enough for putting together an SEN class at Sowerby Bridge Pool. It allowed Isaac to take part in swimming lessons along with other neurodivergent children.
Emily was absolutely amazing with him, learning how Isaac functioned, listened to him and changed her whole way of teaching to fit Isaac. He then progressed into the main pool where Naj has concentrated on his stroke skills and endurance so he can manage the training at Borough of Kirklees Swimming Club. One very proud mum!”

Disability Sports Development Officer Debbie Greenwood had the following to say about Sports Services' commitment to their SEND programme of activities.

"Isaac’s achievements in the regional Special Olympics event in Blackpool highlights the successful coordination and delivery of Sports Services popular SEND swimming lesson programme.  All 3 of our pools and fitness centres, Brighouse, Sowerby Bridge & Todmorden provide swimming lessons for children and young people with varying needs and abilities.
To ensure that the needs of all participants are met, qualified swimming teachers deliver ‘The Alpha Step Awards’ which are a series of three Awards that provide manageable development stages for children who may need additional support. The Awards consist of basic water confidence and aquatic skills that, once mastered, will enable a smooth transition into Stage 1 of the Learn to Swim Framework enabling participants to progress within the swimming development programme.
In addition to the above lesson programme, 'SEND Family fun swims' run on a monthly basis at Brighouse Pool & Fitness Centre along with 'SEND Inflatable Family fun swims' during every school holiday’
