The Social Stroll takes place on the last Friday of every month at 10 AM, starting from the OSCA Foundation. Participants can look forward to approximately 45 minutes of gentle walking, followed by a warm cup of coffee and the chance to chat and share experiences with others.
This event is designed for anyone connected to Overgate Hospice—whether you’re a patient, a carer, or someone who has experienced bereavement. It offers a welcoming environment for attendees to support each other and build connections within the community.
The Inspiration Behind the Stroll
The idea for the Social Stroll originated from discussions with patients and their families, highlighting a desire for more relaxed and engaging activities. As Calderdale's only adult hospice, Overgate Hospice aims to reach out to the community and provide support for those in need.
The Social Stroll was born out of the understanding that social interaction can greatly benefit mental and physical well-being. By participating, attendees can meet others who share similar experiences, fostering a sense of camaraderie and understanding.
A Relaxed Walking Experience
It’s important to note that the Social Stroll is designed to be a gentle walk—not a route march! The focus is on enjoying the local area, taking in the fresh air, and having fun while socialising with others. So far, 35 people have taken part in Overgate social stroll walks.
If you're interested in joining, the team at Overgate Hospice is open to scheduling walks at times that work best for participants. They understand the importance of flexibility to ensure that everyone can take part in this beneficial experience.
Peter's Story
“I am 78 years old and my wife of 53 years passed away in December 2021. We have lived on Illingworth Road for 48 years. Recently, I had a stent fitted and it is now essential that I take regular exercise in an appropriate environment. I look forward to the OSCA Social Stroll because it helps my fitness and offers social interaction.

My involvement in the Overgate OSCA activities has helped me to maintain and improve my general health and wellbeing. Joining this group based around first-class OSCA facilities is a tremendous example of what can be done. Thank you.”
