Discovering confidence through movement

Before joining the gym, I didn’t really have many consistent opportunities to stay active. I would sometimes sign up for classes or activities, like a local squash club, usually because people I knew were involved. I always gave them a try, but they never lasted long. I’ve always enjoyed being active, so it was always disappointing when those opportunities came to an end.

There were also a number of barriers that made it harder to take part regularly, including travel, cost, time, and the environment. As a Muslim South Asian woman, it was really important for me to find a space where I felt comfortable, somewhere women-only, where I could be myself and feel like a valued member. Commercial gyms have always felt off-putting to me, and going for walks or runs on the roads isn’t something I’ve ever felt comfortable doing either.

Since joining the gym at Unique Community Hub, I’ve discovered so many more opportunities to get active, both through the centre and in the wider community. Walking is something I never thought I’d enjoy, but after trying just one session with the Himmat group, I absolutely loved it. It’s made a huge difference to my mental health and improved my fitness. I used to think that pushing myself hard in the gym was the only way to get into shape, but walking has been just as beneficial in its own way. It’s brought a sense of calm to my daily routine that I didn’t realise I needed.

Walking in the park with a group of women has been especially positive. I feel safe, relaxed, and genuinely enjoy being out there. I even recommended it to my mother-in-law, who now joins me regularly. Word has spread, and now some of her friends come along too, walking sticks and all!

I first heard about the group through social media and from other women at the gym. At first, I was hesitant. I wasn’t sure about being out in the park, as it’s not the same as the comfort of a ladies-only gym where I can fully be myself. But having familiar faces there made all the difference. A few of us went together, and it quickly became something we could enjoy and laugh about as a group.

We’re now hoping to organise walks further afield and explore more green spaces in the area. Calderdale has so much to offer, and it would be great to grow the group even more.

Challenge yourself or join a group where you will be supported. Aim for 10k steps a day, but just remember, consistency is key, even if you're not aiming to walk that much, as long as you move more than you did yesterday!

I’ve definitely noticed I have more energy throughout the day, simply by moving more. It’s also had a positive impact at home; my kids now take part in the running and walking clubs at Unique Hub, and my daughter and I attend the Thursday evening sessions together. As I mentioned, my mother-in-law is also really enjoying it, especially as it’s so close to where we live.

It’s been so nice to reconnect with the outdoors. Before joining the walking group, I couldn’t remember the last time I went to the park just for myself. Being surrounded by nature, the birds, the greenery, and the water makes the whole experience even more enjoyable.
