Finding New Ways to Move: How U3A Todmorden Swept into Floor Curling

Written by U3A Todmorden
At U3A Todmorden (University of the Third Age), we're passionate about helping people stay connected, keep learning and enjoy life in their later years. From walking groups and table tennis to local history talks and creative activi
ties, our members are always keen to try something new. Thanks to a partnership with Active Calderdale, that's exactly what happened this year when we discovered the joys of indoor floor curling.
A community built on learning and belonging
U3A is part of a global movement that encourages lifelong learning, friendship and shared interests for people who are no longer in full-time employment. Founded in Todmorden in 2008 with just seven members, U3A Todmorden has grown into a thriving organisation of more than 500 members.
Everything we do is run by members, for members. Whether it's joining one of our many special interest groups, attending monthly talks, heading out on a Let's Go trip, or taking part in one of our sports and leisure activities, there's something for everyone in a friendly and welcoming environment.
Our programme includes everything from local history and cultural diversity talks to activities such as walking, table tennis and pickleball, with opportunities to get involved on a weekly, monthly or one-off basis.
An invitation that sparked something new
Earlier this year, Emma, a Public Health Practitioner with Active Calderdale, invited some of our members to the launch of the Active Ambassadors pilot project in Todmorden. After hearing about U3A through word of mouth and social media, she saw an opportunity for our organisations to work together and inspire more people to enjoy the benefits of staying active, whatever their age.

Two of our lead members, Bill and Brenda, attended the launch alongside Emma, Aron from AHR Inclusion and representatives from other community groups. Their enthusiasm for staying active at any age quickly shone through, making them ideal ambassadors for trying something new.
Following the event in February, a dedicated taster session was organised for U3A members at Todmorden College in May. Twelve members came along to give it a go and explore a different way of being active.
Creating opportunities for everyone
As U3A's activity organiser, Bill recognised that while many members enjoyed existing activities, some were looking for something a little less physically demanding.

His aim was clear:
"To establish a floor curling activity group for U3A members, targeting those less physically able than needed for our established badminton, cricket and pickleball groups."
Following the taster session, indoor floor curling emerged as the ideal activity. It was inclusive, social, easy to learn and accessible to a wider range of members.
With support from Active Calderdale, plans were soon put in place to launch regular sessions at Todmorden Leisure Centre.

Sweeping into success
The weekly floor curling group began in early September and quickly attracted 20 members keen to get involved.

Just a few weeks in, the sessions are already proving to be a hit. Members have enjoyed learning a new skill, spending time together and, importantly, finding a way to move more at a pace that suits them.

For some of our more sedentary members, floor curling has provided a comfortable and enjoyable introduction to being active. It demonstrates that movement doesn't have to be intense or competitive to make a positive difference. Sometimes it's simply about finding an activity that feels welcoming, achievable and fun.
It's never too late to try something new
Our floor curling story is a great example of what can happen when communities come together to create opportunities for people of all abilities. Through the support of Active Calderdale and the enthusiasm of our members, we've been able to introduce an activity that is helping more people stay active, connected and engaged.
If there's one thing we've learned, it's that you're never too old to discover a new hobby, make new friends or find a new way to move.
