Calderdale is taking another big step towards a more active, connected future, as three new Active Travel Hubs secure £50,000 each through the latest round of West Yorkshire Combined Authority funding.

These new hubs, based in Brighouse, Hebden Bridge and Elland, will make it easier for people to build walking, wheeling and cycling into everyday life, offering local access to equipment, training, activities and expert advice.

With support from Calderdale Council, each hub is now developing plans to become a welcoming, one-stop shop for active travel in their communities.

Local hubs, tailored to local communities

Each hub brings something unique, reflecting the needs and strengths of its local area.

In Brighouse, Pennine GP Alliance is working with community partners to deliver a wide range of opportunities, from led walks and rides to bike maintenance workshops, adult cycle training and children’s balance bike sessions.

“Ride, Roll and Stroll Brighouse is all about making it easier and more enjoyable for people to get moving in ways that work for them… There’s a real appetite in Brighouse for doing things differently, and this project brings our community together in a really positive, practical way.”

In Hebden Bridge, IOU Hostel is combining its creative roots with community collaboration to launch the Upper Calder Valley’s new hub. With new cycle storage and electric charging points already in place, plans include bike hire and a programme of inclusive walking, hiking and cycling activities.

“Through creativity, engineering and a focus on community engagement, we will deliver exciting and innovative projects that get people moving… We’re really excited to deliver inclusive walking, hiking and cycling workshops to improve health, well-being, and confidence.”

Meanwhile, in Elland, Project Colt will build on its established bike workshop, expanding into a fully-fledged hub offering bike recycling, servicing, affordable bike sales and hire, as well as training, guided rides and route advice.

“Project Colt active travel hub is more than a place to pass through, it’s a space that removes barriers, inspires healthier choices, and welcomes everyone to learn, connect, and be part of a more active community.”

Building on strong foundations

These new hubs join two existing hubs in North Halifax, delivered by North Halifax Partnership at Mixenden Activity Centre and Forest Cottage.

Over the past year, these hubs have focused on building a self-sustaining, volunteer-led model, offering free bike maintenance courses, bike borrowing schemes, e-bike trials and regular group walks and rides.

“The goal is to become a staple in people’s lives to rely on for cheap, effective, independent, and environmentally friendly transport, whilst also creating an inclusive community around the hub.”

Sam, Active Travel Hub Coordinator

A growing network for active travel

Together, the five hubs form part of Calderdale’s Active Travel Network, established in late 2025. This network brings together organisations and individuals to share ideas, collaborate and find new ways to support residents to walk, wheel and cycle.

As the network grows, so too does the opportunity to create lasting change—making active travel a realistic, attractive option for more people across the borough.
