In June 2024, Steven first became involved with Adult Services at a time when life felt overwhelming. As the main carer for his wife, CS, who lives with early-onset dementia/Alzheimer’s, Steven was supporting every aspect of daily living, from personal care to ensuring her safety. The demands of caring had left little room for anything else. He was exhausted, had lost weight, and simply didn’t have time to think about his own wellbeing. Like many carers, he also felt unsure about what help and support were available.

With the support of a social worker, Steven began to access the right information and services for both himself and CS. This included guidance on financial assessments to ensure CS was not unnecessarily self-funding her care. CS also had a Living Well conversation and was referred to Higgins Close Day Services, helping to build a network of ongoing support around her needs.

Recognising the toll caring was taking on Steven’s health, he was referred to Making Space for dedicated carers' support. Over the following months, CS received continued assistance through liaison with Occupational Therapy, an increased package of care, and additional day services. Respite was also arranged, giving Steven something he hadn’t experienced in a long time, space to focus on himself.

With this new support in place, Steven began to reclaim time and energy for his own wellbeing. What followed was nothing short of remarkable.

Recently, Steven completed a 90-mile trek to the base camp of Mount Everest, a physically demanding journey that climbed 3.5 miles in elevation to reach 17,600ft above sea level. Along the way, he raised an incredible £1,530 for Overgate Hospice, turning a personal challenge into an act of generosity and community spirit.

With the support of adult social care, Steven had the the time and ability to achieve a massive feat of physical activity, and raise money for a brilliant cause while doing it.

Steven’s story is a powerful reminder of the difference the right support can make. Through adult social care services and a renewed focus on self-care and physical activity, he was able to restore balance in his life, rebuild his strength, and achieve an extraordinary personal milestone.
