Since forming in December 2022, Sowerby Walkers & Ramblers have been leading the way in creating inclusive, welcoming opportunities for people across Calderdale to get out and walk together.
The group meets most weekends, usually around midday, exploring the area’s stunning landscapes and waterways. Their motto says it all: “Hike Yourself Happy”, and true to that, they head out in all weather, sharing fresh air, friendship, and feel-good moments every week.
A walking evolution
Over time, the group has grown and evolved to meet the needs of its members. What began as a simple walking group has expanded into a varied programme, including:
Weekly Walks - most regular walks of varying terrain, 5-8 miles every week.
Amelie’s Ambles – gentle, relaxed monthly walks open to new and less confident walkers
Steve’s Strolls – steady and sociable routes also open to new and less confident walkers
Speedies – faster-paced, more challenging walks for those who want to push themselves, walking 10-20 miles on challenging routes
After chatting with members and regular walkers, founder Adrian Horton, alongside Emma from Active Sowerby Bridge, recognised a demand for walks that cater to different abilities, fitness levels, and confidence levels.
With additional training and encouragement, more members stepped into leadership roles, helping the group grow both its offer and its community.
All walks remain free to join, and most end with a well-earned drink or bite to eat at a local pub, a perfect way to relax and connect.
The outcome
Today, Sowerby Walkers & Ramblers has:
Over 2,000 members
Eight trained walk leaders
A thriving programme of regular walks
Their website keeps members updated with upcoming routes, while their popular Facebook page shares maps and highlights from past adventures.
Meet the Walk Leaders
Steve
Originally from London, Steve has lived in Calderdale for 25 years. His passion for walking began during school trips to the Yorkshire Dales, where he developed not only a love for the outdoors but also skills in navigation, geography, and geology.
Over time, stepping into a leadership role felt natural.
“Adrian’s enthusiasm for the group was infectious. It was a friendly group, which I was proud to be part of, so my involvement grew organically.”
Today, Steve leads a wide range of walks, from relaxed strolls to long-distance challenges across varied terrain.
“If you want help in losing weight, getting fitter and improving your mental health — get walking!”
Evette
At 56, Evette has been walking for over three decades, but for her, it’s much more than a hobby. After a challenging early life, she discovered walking in her 30s as a way to support her mental health.
“I would start a walk feeling emotional and confused, but by the end, my mindset was happier, clearer and content.”
She joined Sowerby Walkers & Ramblers in 2022/23 and quickly found a supportive, like-minded community. Now a walk leader, Evette heads up the Speedies group, leading 10–16 mile walks at a brisk pace, helping others build stamina and confidence.
“Don’t hesitate, go for it. Walking helps you become the best version of yourself. It calms the mind, heals the soul and brings endless laughter… and that’s a great thing to have.”
Sarah
A mum of three and a carer, Sarah values walking as essential ‘me-time’. The fresh air, scenery, and social connection all play a big part in her wellbeing. She joined the group in April 2023 to meet new people and explore the beautiful area she calls home, and quickly became a regular.
Now a walk leader herself, she enjoys planning routes and guiding others.
“I love walking through the woods and having a clamber on the rocks, but tracks and fields are just as great!”
Sarah encourages anyone who is unsure to simply give it a go:
“You can’t beat the outdoors, the sounds of nature, the sense of freedom, the physical and mental benefits… and the friendships you make along the way.”
She also highlights the group’s warm, inclusive atmosphere:
“Everyone is made to feel welcome, whether you come once or every week.”
Tony
After being forced to leave work in December 2023 due to back issues, Tony turned to walking as a way to manage pain and clear his mind. Following surgery in January 2025, he gradually rebuilt his fitness, with the group supporting him every step of the way.
Tony joined in August 2024, starting with shorter walks before progressing to the Speedies and eventually becoming a walk leader himself.
His ambition? A lifelong dream:
✅ Trekking Kilimanjaro
🔜 Everest Base Camp (May)
“I couldn’t have done it without the support of the group, they pushed me and encouraged me to go further.”
His advice to anyone thinking about joining:
“Just do it. It can be daunting, but reach out, ask to meet a leader before a walk or for a buddy to support you.”
And his final message:
“Come along, make new friends… you might surprise yourself with where you go and what you discover. Adventures await!”
Final Thoughts
Sowerby Walkers & Ramblers is a thriving community built on friendship, encouragement, and shared experiences.
Whether you’re taking your first steps or training for a major challenge, there’s a place for everyone.
So why not lace up your boots and join them?
