Olayinka's Story

My name is Olayinka, and I live in Halifax with my two young children. I moved here from Nigeria a few years ago, hoping for a better future for my family. Back home, I was always active—walking to the market, dancing with friends, and enjoying the outdoors.

However, life in the UK has presented several barriers to staying active.

Overcoming Challenges

Affordability has been a significant issue. Between caring for my kids and managing household expenses, gym memberships and exercise classes felt out of reach. Public transport to affordable facilities was also challenging due to costs and time.

I often felt out of place at local gyms, unsure if I’d be welcomed. Balancing work, family, and adapting to a new culture left me little time for fitness, and I often felt isolated and unmotivated.

But everything changed when I joined the programme at Light Up Black and African Heritage Calderdale (Light Up BAHC). Their free sessions, close to home, made exercise accessible and affordable. The instructors understood our cultural background, which made me feel welcome and comfortable.

Building Community

Through the programme, I met other women from similar backgrounds, forming a supportive network. I regained my confidence and felt a renewed sense of energy and well-being. Exercise transformed from a chore into a joyful activity that brought us together.

The sense of community has been incredible. From day one, the programme leaders and participants were friendly and welcoming.

Knowing I was surrounded by people like me, people who understood my experiences, made a huge difference.

Flexible session times helped me fit exercise around my busy schedule, and the option to bring my children alleviated stress. The trainers were fantastic—patient and encouraging, they taught us how to exercise safely, making sessions fun with music and dance.

Looking Ahead

Since starting the programme, I’ve experienced many positive changes. I have more energy, I feel stronger, and my mood has improved. I’m committed to staying active, with plans to incorporate activities I enjoy, like dancing and walking, into my routine.

I now understand that staying active is a long-term commitment to my health and happiness. While challenges will arise, I believe the community I’ve found will help me stay on track.

Overall Impact

Being active has transformed my life beyond just fitness. I feel more energetic, happier, and less stressed. My confidence has soared, and I'm proud of my commitment to my well-being.

I’m grateful to Light Up Black and African Heritage Calderdale for showing me that taking care of my body is vital to my overall happiness.
